Start-up of hybrid anaerobic biofilm reactor treating effluent and using wheat straw as both a carrier support and a substrate

Résumé

In order to reduce the operational treatment steps and costs of both liquid and solid wastes, we have developed a new anaerobic biofilm process of two function stages using lignocellulosic waste (wheat straw) as biofilm carrier for the treatment of wine effluent in the first step and then using the colonized lignocellulosic support as a substrate in the second step. For this aim, we have studied first the start-up phase of an anaerobic biofilm reactor treating synthetic wine effluent, and then the degradation of colonized wheat straw without effluent addition. During the feeding stage, the start-up of this reactor, from organic loading rates (OLR) of 0.65 to 24 gCOD.L-1.d-1, occurred rapidly in 23 days with chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal ranged between 86 and 96%. During this period, the VFAs concentration was lower than 0.8 g.L-1 and of VSS was about 0.3 g.L-1. In the second stage, the digestion of straw showed linear gas production during the first 30 days of digestion and a methane production was about 0.75 LCH4.d-1. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of the biofilm during the two stages, using CE-SSCP and PCRq, showed that the rate of the adhered Archaea to the wheat straw was higher during the second stage while the rate of suspended Archaea was higher in the first stage.
