New particulate organic matter mapping in ADM1 for sludge digestion

Résumé

A new structure of hydrolysis step was introduced in anaerobic digestion model n°1 (ADM1) in order to improve the representation of the bioaccessibility of particulate organic matter. Two particulate organic matter fractions for waste activated sludge (WAS) samples were defined: a readily hydrolysable fraction (Xcr) and a slowly hydrolysable fraction (Xcs). The hydolysis kinetics were modeled according to a surface-limiting reaction. Batch test experiments were used to develop the model and to calibrate the kinetic parameters. The model input variables were based on the substrate characterisation whereas biomass concentrations were predicted by the model. Four successive experimental batch tests could be modeled and needed little changes in kinetic parameter sets through successive batch runs. The results confirmed that the hydrolysis is limiting step and indicated that the intermediate component of degradation are also important steps. Moreover, the quality of the optimised parameter sets and their applicability in full-scale process modeling were assessed thanks to a validation procedure carried out from continuous pilot-scale digester data.
