Figure majeure de l’abstraction conceptuelle, David Diao questionne les usages et les institutions du monde de l’art. Les documents d’archive, photographies, listes, chiffres de ventes, biographies, carrières d’artistes — dont la sienne — bouleversent l’approche que l’on a de la peinture. Reproduits sur un fond monochrome très élaboré, les documents ont une valeur informative tout comme une valeur esthétique. Diao donne à la peinture une dimension conceptuelle effective : focalisée sur l’information et le contenu. Et s’il donne un rôle central à l’information, il affirme aussi la présence irréductible de la peinture, qui rend le rôle des documents plus complexe à définir, comme le montrent les essais du présent ouvrage. Ce livre est tiré des conférences du colloque international « Peinture et document : David Diao » qui s’est tenu en 2014 à Strasbourg. - Major figure of conceptual abstraction, David Diao questions the customs and institutions of the art world. Archive documents, photographs, lists, sales datas, artists’ careers, biographies — including his own — provoke a radical change in the approach that we have of painting. The documents are here reproduced on a sophisticated monochrome background, and their value is informative as well as aesthetic. Diao gives its conceptual value to painting: based on information and content. But if there is, in Diao’s work, a central place accorded to information, there is also the unyielding presence of painting, which makes the role of documents more complex to explain, as shown in the different contributions to this book. This volume is based on the conferences of the international symposium “Painting and Document: David Diao”, that took place in 2014 in Strasbourg.
