Projected Climate Changes and Regional Security

Résumé

AB: Climate models suggest that substantial changes in temperature and precipitation could affect in the future the quality of life and the strength of the economy in different regions of the world. Several reports such as the document produced a few years ago by the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WGBU) have assessed the effects of climate change on regional and global security. Climate Services are being developed in different countries of the world to help society to adapt to anticipated climate changes. These services will make use of operational monitoring and predicting systems developed by environmental agencies, including the GMES Program in Europe. The paper will discuss some of these projects and show some examples (e.g., the opening of the Northern Passages to international shipping) where climate change will affect the way society operates.
