Résumé

Until now, direct contact between a biological material and blood could be sustained for a short period of time, and typically required the administration of some heparin-based anticoagulant or antithrombotic treatment to prevent thrombosis. Other approaches have been explored in order to circumvent problems arising from the long-term use of these treatments. A new generation of polymers has been developed that are functionalized in order to specifically recognize key biological components. After introducing general issues of blood compatibility and introducing bioactive random copolymers (BIORACS) - a proprietary technology - a number of examples are provided that show the range of applications of BIORACS.
