CO and SO2: two IASI products operationally distributed by EUMETCAST

Résumé

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an important trace gas for understanding air quality and atmospheric composition. It is a good tracer of pollution plumes and atmospheric dynamics. IASI CO concentrations are retrieved from the radiance data using the Fast Operational Retrievals on Layers for IASI (FORLI) algorithm, based on the Optimal Estimation theory. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is also a pollutant, and a precursor of particulate matter (PM). The majority of high-altitude SO2 originates from explosive volcanic eruptions. Long-lived sulphate aerosols which are formed from SO2 in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere can have a non-negligible impact on the Earth's climate. The Brescia algorithm calculates IASI SO2 total columns using brightness temperature differences and lookuptables assuming 5 different plumes heights (7-25 km). The operational production is performed at EUMETSAT and the products are distributed in NRT via EUMETCast under the CDOP2/O3M SAF auspices. CO is already operational and the release of SO2 is planned in the course of 2017. In the future, other IASI products will be available: O3 and HNO3 (CDOP2), as well as NH3, dust and ash in the framework of CDOP3/ AC SAF. We present here an analysis of 9 years of global distributions of CO and SO2 and examples of pollution events.
