Etude du contact corde / frette

Abstract : Some musical instruments (electric basses, double basses, tanpuras, sitars...) have a specific sound due to the contact between the vibrating string and an obstacle. While quite a large number of analytical and numerical studies has been carried out on this kind of contact, only a few concern experimental results. The aim of this study is to show experimentally the behaviour of an electric bass string when it hits frets while vibrating. For that purpose, we focus on the contact between a bass string and a point obstacle. Experimental results are compared with analytical ones in the case of an ideal string, as well as numerical results for a stiff string based on a conservative scheme. Results show a good agreement between analytical, experimental and numerical signals.
