Abstract : Nonlinear optics has now evolved into a mature field with the major emphasis on applications. However, with the advent of ultrashort laser pulses of very high peak intensities, a revisit of many classical non-linear effects become necessary. Previously well understood systems are easily driven to an extreme nonlinear regime. our example is the recently observed formation of optical filaments. The dynamic evolution of these intense femtosecond pulses during their propagation through air is investigated in applications of the filament source to the generation of higher harmonics of the fundamental frequency.
